With Thursday being the first day of winter, many people across New Zealand may expect cold snaps to be knocking on their front doors.
However, MetService said we can expect much warmer temperatures than usual.
At this time of year, most of us are adding extra blankets to our bedding and retrieving our slippers from the back of the wardrobe, but one meteorologist said that won't be necessary for everyone.
MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker described Thursday's temperatures as "very warm".
Bakker outlined the temperatures for Thursday across a few places in New Zealand.
Auckland will sit at 19C, Wellington will be at 18C instead of the usual 14C for this time of year, Christchurch will be 19C instead of 13C, Alexandra will reach 18C compared to 10C, and Dunedin will sit at 18C instead of 12C.
Bakker described Thursday's weather as a "blip of warm temperature", adding that the warmer digits aren't here to stay.
"What we're seeing now isn't going to last long," he told Newshub.
"In the North Island it will then become cold on Friday, with most places dropping down to single digits overnight on Friday."
Bakker said the South Island will be warm overnight on Thursday, but by Friday it will cool down.
"It's going to be warm in the east and wet in the west," he said.
Whangārei will remain in double digits, with Thursday's expected temperature to be 10C.
Bakker said the beginning of winter is looking very warm compared to what he'd expect to see.
"The calendar says it's winter but nature is saying 'not yet'."
However, the higher numbers shouldn't be cause for concern, with Bakker saying he'd only be worried if the warm temperatures over winter stayed for weeks on end.
"It is warmer than usual, but it isn't alarming."
