Long lines of Aucklanders desperately waiting to get home and dry have formed outside public transport centres as flooding causes mayhem in the city.
City streets and motorways are in gridlock as people flock home after Auckland was plunged into a state of emergency. But for those relying on public transport, it's not just congestion on the roads holding people up.
Photos show lengthy queues of people outside bus stations.
One person told Newshub people are queued up back into the Commercial Bay mall overbridge to get into buses to North Shore.
Auckland Transport (AT) said its teams are working to restore public transport services across Auckland after a period of "significant disruption" following Tuesday's heavy rain.
AT said there are currently significant delays, a high number of cancellations and detours in place for the bus network.
Services on the Northern Busway are running slower than usual because of damage to a section of the busway near Akoranga Station which is now down to one lane.
Auckland Emergency Management said due to traffic conditions and flooding on the North Shore the NX1, NX5, 95 and 97 services are being particularly hard hit, with very long queues at City Centre bus stops. AT is encouraging passengers wanting to travel to the North Shore to shelter in the city until queues ease.
Train services have resumed on the Southern and Western Lines, with services running at significantly lower speeds until further clearance is received from KiwiRail. Services on the Onehunga Line remain suspended for the time being.
AT said there is a number of cancellations in place for ferry services on Tuesday night.
"We appreciate how frustrating things have been for our passengers this afternoon and we’d like to thank them for their patience as they’ve waited for our teams to clear queues and get them home safely," AT group manager metro services Darek Koper said in a statement.
"For the latest information about public transport services we're encouraging Aucklanders to check the AT Mobile App or Live Departures on the AT website."
At is asking Aucklanders to avoid travelling this evening once they have made it home safely.
For people still needing to travel home they are urged to be extra careful, with the effects of the heavy rain continuing to be felt across the city.
