The driver of the truck that hit an overbridge on Auckland's Southern Motorway has died, police have confirmed.
Police said emergency services were alerted to the crash on the Southern Motorway near Drury at around 10:30am when a truck hit an overbridge.
In an update at 2pm, police confirmed the driver has died.
"Our thoughts are with their friends and family at this difficult time," a police spokesperson said.
The crash has seen the Southern Motorway fully closed in both directions between Drury and Papakura.
Police said there are a number of diversions in place on Wednesday while the scene is cleared and damage to the overbridge is assessed.
Both the north and southbound lanes remain closed at this stage and traffic will continue to be diverted on Wednesday afternoon.
"The Bremner Road overbridge is also still closed between Creek and Victoria Roads," a spokesperson said.
"Police will provide an update once assessors have established the area is safe for travel."
Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing.
Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said SH1 will be closed in both directions between 9pm to 5am on Thursday between Drury and Papakura.
A signposted detour via Great South Road will be in place, NZTA said.
NZTA said crews will be installing barriers and carrying out repair works to the Bremner Road overbridge following the crash.
There is currently a full closure on SH1 in both directions between Drury and Papakura. This closure will remain in place until the site has been cleared, NZTA said.
