Canterbury police say they have arrested a fleeing driver after he crashed into a person's car and seriously injured the person inside.

In a statement, Canterbury Metro area commander Superintendent Lane Todd said the 28-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning in Christchurch's Mairehau.

It all unfolded shortly after 9am on Friday when police signalled for the vehicle to stop on Cranford St due to its driving.

But Supt Todd said the driver instead fled.

Not long after, the man allegedly crashed into a member of the public's vehicle on Mairehau's Nancy Rd.

"The member of the public received serious injuries and was transported to Christchurch Hospital."

Supt Todd said the man was arrested at the scene.

"They had sustained minor injuries. A firearm in the vehicle was seized. Charges are forthcoming."

Supt Todd said Nancy Rd was closed while the serious crash unit conducted a scene examination.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing," he said.

And now police are asking witnesses of the crash or anyone who has video footage to contact police on 105 and quote file number P054933271.
