Hamilton mother begs for help claiming Kāinga Ora neighbours are abusive, threaten to kill pets

A Hamilton mother says she doesn't "want to be in my own home" following years of abuse from her neighbours, and now she is begging for a way out.

Katelyn Park's neighbours are Kāinga Ora tenants and she claims they've verbally abused and her four children and threatened to burn her house down.

"They've threatened to burn my house down, they've threatened to beat me and my mum and they've threatened to kill my animals."

But despite multiple complaints to Kāinga Ora, she says nothing is being done and the abuse continues.

"They're abusing me, abusing the (her) kids, abusing each other. I've had instances where I've had a babysitter here so I could have a night out and the babysitter has called me and said, 'Your neighbours are going off and I can't deal with this'."

The mother of four claims her neighbours have smashed a glass fruit bowl, beer bottles and pill cartons against her home.

"Their daughter came into my house and stabbed holes in my sofa and tipped nail polish on it, there's a big list."

She told AM on Sunday the tenants screamed abuse at her after she asked them to turn down the music.

Despite Kāinga Ora providing a dedicated point-of-contact for Park when situations unfold, she fears her neighbour's behaviour will continue because "they just don't care".

Park told AM she's expressed to Kāinga Ora that she herself wants to move and believes they should help her do that, she worries if they are moved "they would come back on their threats".

"My fear is that Kāinga Ora move them and the threat is still there and they'll just come back for payback."

In a statement to AM, Regional Director for Waikato Kāinga Ora Mark Rawson said he understood how "upsetting and frustrating this has been for Katelyn and her family"

"We're doing everything we can to resolve this situation as soon as possible, including the option to move the customer."

Rawson did say it will take time "which we know is really difficult"

"But we want to provide assurance that we are taking action, and taking this extremely seriously. We urge Katelyn to keep getting in touch with our dedicated point-of-contact we have provided, at any time that she needs support while we work through this."
