A cat was behind a mass power outage causing a blackout in Napier tonight that lasted around half an hour.
Residents were in darkness after the cat connected with live wires causing an "explosion".
Earlier this evening, Transpower confirmed to Newshub there was an outage in Napier and their crews were on the way.
One resident claimed to hear a "big bang" near the Redclyffe substation.
"I don't think any of Napier has power," another resident said on social media earlier.
In an update at 7:25pm, Transpower thanked locals for their patience and said supply had been restored to the Redclyffe substation.
They said the power may take time to come back on at homes and businesses in the area.
"The outage was unfortunately caused by a cat connecting with live electrical equipment which caused an electrical flashover (or explosion)," Transpower said.
Napier City Council said they were grateful to Transpower for restoring power to Napier quickly.
"Our community is still recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle and events such as this, however short-lived, can be concerning. It’s another reminder to be prepared for power outages," a spokesperson told Newshub.
