A man has been arrested after person was fatally stabbed in Whangārei on Monday afternoon.
Police said officers were called to an Anzac Road property in the Whangārei suburb of Morningside at 5.30pm, where the man was located with a stab wound.
Detective Inspector Bridget Doell, of the Northland CIB, said the offender had fled the scene before police had arrived.
"Frontline staff immediately began enquires to locate the man. Meanwhile, the man was transported to hospital in a critical condition," Doell said.
Doell confirmed the person has since died as a result of their injuries and police have launched a homicide investigation.
"The man's whānau have been advised and they are understandably distraught at what has occurred," Doell said.
"We are ensuring there is support in place for them."
In an update on Tuesday afternoon, police said after making enquires overnight, they found a 50-year-old man who was arrested.
He has been charged with murder and threatens to kill and is due to appear in the Whangārei District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Bridget Doell of the Northland CIB said it is understood the victim and the man charged were known to each other.
“As such, we are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to this matter," Doell said.
A number of enquiries are still yet to be completed and Doell said the community can expect to see police in the area while these are carried out.
Doell said she is proud of the swift action police have taken overnight.
“While at the centre of this investigation is a tragic incident, we are pleased to have been able to bring a quick resolution to the victim’s grieving whānau," Doell said.
“We hope this also brings reassurance to the community who will be concerned today.”
Police hope to provide further details around the identity of the victim when they're in a position to do so.
"However, as this matter is now before the Court, we are limited in providing further comment," Doell said.
This latest stabbing comes after a man was arrested and charged following the death of Northland woman Linda Woods in Kaikohe in late May.
Earlier this month, two people were rushed to hospital after reportedly being stabbed in the small Northland town of Moerewa near the Bay of Islands.
