Police, local businesses cleaning up Wellington's Courtenay Place in effort to revitalise area

Known for its nightlife, Wellington's Courtenay Place looked a little different on Monday - it has had a clean-up.

Businesses, council and even police picked up brooms and rags to scrub the street, hoping to change the narrative around the area.

The Wellington street is most known for attracting partygoers but it also attracts a bit of a mess.

One local said the area has a bit of a reputation for being dirty and unsafe.

"Somebody said to me they were scared to walk down Manners Street because of the people, the place and the dirt," they said.

But Wellington City Council is working to change that.

"We've sort-of spoken to a lot of the operators around this area and they've talked about cleanliness as one of the issues they would like to see addressed in this area," the council's central city manager Prak Sritharan said.

The cleaning efforts led by the council were sparked by upcoming events such as the Women's Football World Cup.

"We have FIFA around the corner, we've just opened our convention centre, we have matariki around the corner," Sritharan said.

Popular bar Mishmosh regularly cleans the area around their building, and they're glad there are now wider efforts to spruce up all of Courtenay Place.

"The big goal is to change the narrative around Courtenay Place a little bit so make it user-friendly all hours of the day," said Mishmosh general manager Charlotte Kurta.

Night crime is also apparent in the area, something local business workers know well

"Once the city starts to get a little bit dirty, a little bit grungy, people stop caring about the streets, people stop caring about the people," a local worker told Newshub.

So Police are committing to joining clean-up efforts too.

"When we pitched to them they were really keen to get involved and be a part in that and make a visual appearance in terms of the day," Sritharan said.

Everyone hoping a cleaner space encourages a safer Courtenay Place, just in time for the  World Cup fans.
