A major crisis response to reports of a chemical smell in central Auckland on Friday night is being blamed on a scooter running inside a building.
Emergency services raced to a central Auckland building after a "potential hazardous material containment incident".
A road was closed and a six-storey building evacuated as emergency services investigated a strong chemical smell.
"Anzac Ave in central Auckland is closed due to a potential hazardous material containment incident. Emergency services are on site," the Auckland Transport travel alert Twitter page wrote.
A Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesperson told Newshub they were called to the building at 4:45pm and sent eight appliances as well as incident support and the breathing apparatus unit.
In an update, another FENZ spokesperson told Newshub the source of the smell has been identified as an electric scooter that was running inside the building.
They are currently working to ventilate the building and some crews are beginning to leave the scene of the incident.
