RNZ is investigating how a Reuters article it published about Russia's war on Ukraine was heavily edited to carry a more pro-Kremlin message.

The state-owned broadcaster has corrected the article and declared it is taking the matter "extremely seriously" and will take "appropriate action".

The paragraph that was edited concerns Russia's 2014 invasion and subsequent annexation of Crimea.

RNZ's version added a reference to a "pro-Western government" that had "suppressed ethnic Russians" and altered the reference to Ukraine's former "pro-Russian president" to "pro-Russian elected government".

Dan Brunskill, a reporter at financial news website interest.co.nz, posted images of the original Reuters paragraph alongside the edited RNZ version from before it was corrected.

RNZ tweeted: "This story has been corrected. RNZ is concerned and takes this matter extremely seriously. We are investigating and have taken appropriate action."

The original Reuters article by Guy Faulconbridge is headlined "In Russia, the talk is of 'war' - even from Putin", while the RNZ article is headlined "Increasing talk of 'war' in Russia worrying sign of escalation".

RNZ has said it will not comment further until its investigation is complete.
