Temperatures have plunged around the country with many places recording sub-zero temperatures on Wednesday morning.
MetService said a ridge continues to dominate over the country, resulting in a clear and calm night.
This has seen some places throughout New Zealand record their coldest morning of the year so far.
MetService confirmed the coldest temperature on Wednesday morning came in the deep south, with Pukaki-Twizel Airport recording a numbing -5.5C.
MetService told Newshub the next coldest place on Wednesday morning was Mt Cook Airport recording a chilly -4.6C at 4am followed by St Arnaud, which was a touch colder at -4.5C at 7am.
Other places to record chilly temperatures on Wednesday morning were Palmerston North Airport 0.2C, Nelson 2.3C, Whitianga 1.9C and Whenuapai Airport 1C.
MetService said six other places recorded sub-zero temperatures, which were Blenheim (Woodbourne Airport) -0.4C, Christchurch Airport -1.1C, Lumsden at -1.8C, Queenstown Airport -2.4C, Alexandra Airport -3.4C and Dunedin Airport -3.8C.
The forecaster said its Auckland Airport weather station recorded its lowest minimum temperature of the year so far, with people from the City of Sails waking to a chilly start of 3.8 degrees.
By 8am it had warmed up slightly to 5C and by 11am it was 10.9C.
Other places to record their coldest minimum temperature of the year so far were on the central and east coasts of the North Island.
People in Whakatāne woke to 2.1C, Hamilton recorded a chilly temperature of -1.6C, Taupō was slightly colder at -2.5C, while Taumarunui recorded a bone-chilling -3.7C.
But while many woke up needing an extra blanket on Wednesday morning, MetService said it will warm up with temperatures expected to reach mid to low teens with another sunny day forecast for those regions.
Wednesday weather
MetService said Northland will see a fine and sunny day apart from a few isolated showers in the Far North, which will clear during the morning.
Auckland to Waitomo including Taumarunui, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Taupō will see a fine and sunny day but temperatures will be chilly, with the City of Sails set to get a high of 14C.
The lower North Island should also see a fine and cloudy day on Wednesday, with just a few isolated showers in South Taranaki, Whanganui and the Wairoa District before clearing this afternoon and evening.
The South Island looks set for a fine day for most places, with MetServices warning about fog and frost for Nelson, Buller and Westland.
Slightly further south, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and Southland will have morning frosts before clearing and becoming mainly fine while Fiordland will have areas of cloud or fog and a few isolated showers.
