The top of the North Island is covered by heavy rain watches with prolonged wet weather expected to douse already-sodden regions.

A low-pressure system is expected to move slowly across northern Aotearoa from Wednesday through to Friday.

MetService meteorologist Andrew James told Newshub west-northeasterlies will bring heavy rain to those regions under heavy rain watches.

"Anyone who is anywhere from Cape Reinga all the way around to Napier, on that northeastern coast of the North Island, those need to stay up to date with the latest at MetService.com, we are in for a prolonged spell of wet weather."

Northland is under a heavy rain watch from 9am Wednesday through to 6am Thursday.

North Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, will be under a heavy rain watch too from 8pm Wednesday to 8am Thursday.

Coromandel Penisula and Bay of Plenty west of Te Puke's heavy rain watch comes into effect at 1am Thursday and ends 6pm Friday.

Gisborne about and north of Tolaga Bay is under a heavy rain watch from 2pm Wednesday through to 10am Thursday.

MetService's website warns those in regions under a heavy rain watch should expect periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms too.
