Two gang members have been arrested after a fight broke out at Sylvia Park mall on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the pair were members or associates of the Rebels gang.
A police spokesperson said officers responded to a fight taking place just before 1pm.
Acting Inspector Matt Child said initial reports were that those fighting were carrying knives and other objects.
"Police were at the mall within minutes and immediately took two people into custody on site," Child said.
Insp Child said due to the nature of what was reported, officers were armed as a precaution.
He confirmed no injuries have been reported from the fight, which took place near Michael Hill Jewellery Store inside the shopping centre.
"Staff at the store activated its fog cannon as a precaution as the fight was taking place outside, however the store was not connected to what took place," Insp Child said.
Both men are now in custody and will be facing charges relating to fighting in a public place, while enquiries are ongoing to locate at least two others involved in the fight.
"Police do not tolerate this sort of violence, which took place in a very public place. The men arrested will now be held accountable for what has occurred," Insp Child said.
Samuel Henderson said he saw a person with a knife so he grabbed his eight-year-old son, ducked down, and sprinted out of the mall when the fight erupted.
"A guy ran past with a knife in his hand," Henderson told NZ Herald.
"That's when I just grabbed my boy and headed for the corridor where the toilets are. I said, 'we are out of here.'"
According to a Reddit post, people were throwing chairs and there was a person with a knife.
A worker in the mall told Stuff police were armed with rifles.
A Michael Hill employee told NZ Herald staff in the store are "very shaken".
Ambulance and mall security were also at the scene while the Michaell Hill store closed during the fight.
