Auckland CBD shooting: More details revealed about gunman Matu Reid's death

Police have released more details about the death of the Auckland CBD gunman after he died following a shootout with police last week.

Matu Reid, 24, killed two and wounded multiple others last Thursday as he moved through the Commercial Bay precinct.

After reaching the upper levels of the building, he barricaded himself in an elevator shaft and exchanged fire with responding police. He was shortly afterwards found dead.

In an update on Monday, Police said they have now completed post-mortem examinations on all three people who died, including Reid, and can now reveal more information.

Detective Superintendent Ross McKay said the post-mortem showed Reid was injured during the gun battle with police officers, however his fatal injury was self-inflicted.

"Three workers who were injured all remain in stable conditions and are continuing to recover well from their ordeal," Det Supt McKay said in a statement.

"The Police officer injured is also continuing to make progress in hospital, however will have a long road to recovery from injuries."

Police have completed a forensic examination of the downtown building site where the shooting occurred, and work is underway to hand the site back to the construction company.

Reid was on home detention for domestic violence charges and was given dispensation to work on the construction site. He didn't have a gun licence.

According to Corrections, he was subject to numerous conditions, including that he was in frequent contact with staff and participate in non-violence and drug and alcohol programmes. He had reported to his probation officer the day before the attack.

A Police investigation is underway and will continue at the same time as the critical incident investigation, and a coordinated learning review. The Independent Police Conduct Authority is also investigating.

A Corrections spokesperson told Newshub that since the shooting is subject to an active police investigation, they aren't able to provide any comment at this time.
