Auckland Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) teams have contained a fire in an Auckland Countdown, which caused extensive amounts of smoke to fill the supermarket.

FENZ shift manager Ryan Geen told Newshub two appliances were sent to Countdown Mt Wellington at about 6:11pm on Thursday.

While on the way, FENZ received further 111 calls about the fire which is understood to be located within the shopping aisle area.
A FENZ aerial appliance, or ladder truck, was subsequently sent, with crews arriving at about 6:15pm.

Geen said fire crews contained the fire, but as a result, the supermarket is "extensively smoke-logged".

He said crews are now undergoing salvage and ventilation of the Countdown. A total of four appliances are at the scene, alongside one aerial appliance and support vehicles.

Fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries.

Geen said a fire investigator is on their way to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

A Countdown spokesperson said the Mount Wellington supermarket will remain closed while the damage is assessed.

The spokesperson said staff at work at the time of the blaze are safe and receiving support.

"We'll also make sure any food that is damaged and is edible is donated to our local food rescue partner."

They added the store will reopen to customers when it's safe to do so and thanked its customers for understanding.
