An Auckland gang member accused of kidnapping a woman appeared in court on Tuesday after handing himself in.
Carlos Harris, 33, appeared in the Waitakere District Court on Tuesday on one charge of kidnapping.
Harris pulled a hand sign at his supporters before he stood motionless and expressionless before a community magistrate.
A small group of Harris' supporters yelled messages of support from the public gallery, including "love you".
On Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Poland of Waitematā said the woman was kidnapped by a group of offenders from a house in the Auckland suburb of Birkenhead on June 12.
A missing person's report was filed on June 27.
"We believe she was then transported to an address in west Auckland where she has been subjected to numerous assaults, before being taken to Northland," Det Snr Sgt Poland said.
On Tuesday police revealed Harris handed himself in at Henderson Police Station overnight.
Harris entered no plea and was remanded in custody until July 13.
