German Shepherd takes on foster father role to group of ducklings

It turns out man's best friend has a soft spot for ducks.

In 2019 Ben the German Shepherd struck up an unlikely friendship with a Paradise duck named Teddy Zoom Zoom.

Now the unlikely foster dad has taken a group of abandoned ducklings under his wing.

Dog and duck parents Julie McGuire and her partner Jake Cederman say Ben was left high and dry when Teddy Zoom Zoom flew away to find a mate and never return.

Cederman was in the orchards last week when he spotted a bunch of ducklings. McGuire decided to take the ducklings home after watching them all day with no parents.

"It was getting cold and yeah they wouldn't have lasted the night, so had to make a choice and yeah bring them in," McGuire said.

Cederman told AM he had the ducklings in one of the rooms in their house, with Ben outside the door.

"He could hear the little quacks so he was a little bit curious and pushed the door open and wanted to meet them," Cederman told AM.

"And he's been by their side the whole time, it's been really really cute."

The couple plans to keep the ducklings as long as they need.

"Being wild ducks they might take off again," said Cederman.

"Ben loves it," McGuire said.
