Police officers in Auckland have narrowly avoided injury after smashing into a bus stop and power pole following a pursuit with a fleeing driver.
Officers were on routine patrol near Newmarket at 12:30am on Monday when they spotted a car that had previously fled from police and did not have a current vehicle registration.
Despite being signalled to stop the driver continued north along Great South Rd and police pursued.
"Police activated their lights and sirens and signalled for the vehicle to stop," a police spokesperson said.
"As the cars were approaching Market Rd both the fleeing driver and the police vehicle crossed onto the flush median to pass a member of the public.
"The Police car has then been forced to take evasive action to avoid striking a raised centre island and unfortunately lost control and collided with a bus shelter and power pole."
Luckily, no one was injured and police said enquiries to locate the fleeing driver are ongoing.
Video from the scene shows the car with extensive damage.
