Police have recovered the bodies of two victims from the scene of the Auckland construction site shooting.
Matu Reid, 24, killed two and wounded multiple others on Thursday as he moved through the Commercial Bay precinct before hiding in an elevator shaft and engaging in a shootout with the police. He was later found dead.
Four people remain in hospital, including a police officer. It's been confirmed the two men killed were in their 40s and worked at the site.
In an update on Friday, Detective Superintendent Ross McKay said the two victims killed in the fatal shooting have now been recovered.
"Poor weather conditions across the Auckland region impacted progress today, adding to the complexities of the scene being a large multi-storey building site," he said in a statement.
"The scene examination at the site has been ongoing today and will continue over the weekend. A cordon remains in place around the immediate vicinity of the site and a scene guard will be in place overnight."
Reid's body has also been recovered, although Police won't name him until all formalities have been completed.
"Once the deceased are recovered, formalities will get underway with post-mortem examinations and formal identification to be carried out in due course," Det Supt McKay said.
"Police are in touch with the families of the two victims who lost their lives in this incident, and we are working alongside Victim Support to ensure they are getting the support they need."
Investigation continues
Det Supt McKay said detectives are working through a "methodical investigation" to understand the motivations behind the shooting.
"It is imperative we allow time for this thorough investigation to be carried out. Our absolute priority is to ensure there are answers for the families affected by this event," he said.
"The investigation team spent yesterday speaking to more than 70 witnesses, and more witness interviews have taken place today."
