It was a cold start to the weekend with many areas across New Zealand waking up to freezing temperatures.

However, the temperature is expected to warm throughout the day and the country is in for a fine Saturday.

Taupō was the coldest place in New Zealand at -4C as of 7am on Saturday, according to MetService. Hamilton, Rotoroa, Blenheim, Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, Queenstown and Dunedin also recorded temperatures in the negatives.

Meanwhile, Gisborne had the highest temperature on Saturday morning at 7C, with Kaikōura and Invercargill just behind at 6C.

The rest of Saturday is forecast to be a mainly settled day for most of the country, with temperatures mostly in the low teens.

"There is a little cloud about for some though with a light shower or two about but it's otherwise not too bad," WeatherWatch said.

Come Sunday, a northwest flow should start to strengthen over the south of the South Island and continue to affect the island on Monday. MetService said on Monday embedded trough brings moderate confidence for warning amounts of rain to Fiordland and low confidence for warning amounts of rain to Westland.

The forecasting agency also said there is a chance of more warning amounts of rain on Tuesday. It said there is moderate confidence for warning amounts of rain in Fiordland and Westland, and a lower confidence in Buller and about the headwaters of the Canterbury and Otago lakes and rivers.
