Animal management officers have managed to trap a "roaming pig" on a west Auckland motorway by luring it with a bit of kai.
Police called Auckland Council's animal management team on Thursday just after 3pm to say the pig was trotting around State Highway 16.
It had avoided capture for a couple of weeks but finally succumbed to a delectable meal.
One of the team, Clarke Trethowen, said they were over the moon to have caught him safely.
"It's eluded everyone for some time but it's satisfying to know it is safely enclosed and no longer a danger to motorists on the busy SH16."
Waka Kotahi had earlier set up a camera to monitor the area the pig was spotted in several times.
Animal management officers placed food in a trap on Wednesday, within view of the camera.
Then on Thursday, it alerted officers the pig had been trapped.
Officers used a stock trailer to transport the animal to Henderson Animal Shelter, with the help of Police and Waka Kotahi.
The pig will remain at the shelter in west Tāmaki Makaurau until it's claimed but will be rehomed if its owners can't be found.
Here's hoping it doesn't get too boar'd in the shelter.
