A hatchback driver has been caught red-handed on video in an extreme near-miss with a truck carrying heavy machinery.
The close call happened on State Highway 4 near Tongariro National Park on Tuesday at about midday.
The driver, Colin Baker, whose dash camera was recording the unbelievable moment, said he pulled over after a "pilot vehicle flagged me to stop which commonsense is good idea on that bridge [sic]."
The black Volkswagen Golf 2013 hatchback screamed past Baker before suddenly braking as the oncoming truck started to drive over the bridge.
The truck, carrying a bulldozer, comes to a sudden stop too. The Golf then reverses to let the truck pass.
Social media users weren't too impressed.
"Shouldn't be behind the wheel, definitely not driving to the conditions," one said.
"What total idiots.. Glad you caught that on camera," another added.
It comes just a day after another shocking video of a near-collision near Porter Pass in Te Waipounamu/the South Island.
