A spokesperson for Heart of the City says there should be a permanent police presence in downtown Auckland, after two people were shot on Thursday night.
Police announced on Friday night one of the victims has since died in hospital after the man was taken off life support. The other victim is now in a stable condition.
It comes just two weeks after another shooting 250 metres away - sparking pleas for more police in the area.
"I'm pretty devastated actually. It's upsetting for all the people living [and] working here. And to come so quickly after another incident is pretty devastating."
At a Police press conference on Friday afternoon, Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton outlined the facts - saying he's confident it was a one-off.
"There were words exchanged, so then the person gets off the scooter and confronts the other group. Then things escalate from there. That's how we're confident it's an isolated offence," he told reporters.
But Beck told Newshub there should be a police station in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau, the CBD, regardless.
"Meanwhile, it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a level of violence that is really unacceptable," she said.
She said Aotearoa New Zealand is still viewed as a safe place compared to other countries, but action is needed now.
"We want to see more police, and the other thing that we think would be helpful is a downtown police station again. That is something that people have really missed, and we'd like to see that back."
Newshub also spoke to the public in Auckland's CBD this morning to gauge their mood.
"It's scary, yeah, it's scary. My son lives up here and I think every time something happens, what are you living there for? Honestly it's awful aye," one mother told Newshub.
"[I] definitely feel safe at the moment, but I probably wouldn't at night," said one man.
"Especially as a girl alone as well," his partner added.
"NZ used to be very safe when I came here 20 years ago. I am very shocked. [During the] last shooting I was very surprised. But this shoot - f**k, you know, what happened?" one man said.
Meanwhile, Det Snr Sgt Bolton made his concern clear for the victims.
"They weren't looking for trouble, and our job is to locate the offender and hold them responsible, so that's what we're doing."
Police are calling on the public for any information around last night's incident.
