A line of overpriced chicken breasts has left some Auckland shoppers and hundreds of internet users scratching their heads.
A Reddit user shared the photo of the three-pack of poultry being sold at an Auckland Countdown, drawing the attention of many to the excessive price.
The barn-raised chicken breasts were selling for a hefty price despite being on 'special', much to the confusion of shoppers.
A photo of the chicken shows two packets, one selling for $12,822 and another selling for $12,590.
The original cost of the chicken could be seen beneath the 'special' label, stating a price of $13.
The post quickly prompted several people to joke about inflation being to blame for the exorbitantly priced meat.
"I'm sick of supermarkets advertising prices as specials that are more expensive than they were before," one user joked.
"There better be gold nuggets nestled in that meat," another said.
A third added, "This inflation is really getting out of hand now."
Countdown said the price of the chicken was a mistake and apologised for ruffling any feathers.
"We always aim to make sure that our prices are clear and accurate, but unfortunately in this case, it looks like we've made a mistake with our in-store labelling," a Countdown spokesperson said.
"If any of our customers see an error in their shop, we ask that they please let our team know so we can make it right," they said, adding their policy was to refund immediately and let the customer keep the product free of charge.
"We apologise for this mistake and any ruffled feathers it's caused."
