A notorious pig that caused commuter chaos on a busy Auckland highway has found his forever home after fears Aucklanders would cook him up and eat him for breakfast.
For over a week, Reggie the pig frequented the shoulder of State Highway 16 causing mischief, annoying commuters and evading capture.
Earlier this month, the highway was temporarily blocked because Reggie was making the most of the weather and "sunbathing" in a bush near the Te Atatu on-ramp.
The stray pig had been on the run from authorities for around two weeks, dashing from council's animal management officers and hiding in the bushes.
A pig trap was set and Reggie was caught after he succumbed to a delectable meal on August 3.
But while Reggie was feasting on his bait, Aucklanders were cooking up a plan to turn the rogue pig into bacon.
He now resides in Taranaki where he joins five other piggies including Gabe, an equally adventurous porcine rescued from Cyclone Gabrielle.
"I actually saw it on Facebook and saw all the comments about people eating him and how delicious he would taste and was kind of horrified and thought well we could take one more," Anneke Carlson said.
"He will definitely have a happy home, they are very spoilt."
