Police have launched a homicide investigation after a person critically injured in Thursday's shooting in central Auckland died in hospital.
Auckland City CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton said the man was taken off life support earlier on Friday.
"Sadly [he] succumbed to his injuries with family beside him," he said in a statement.
"This is a tragic outcome for all concerned, and our focus remains on locating the person responsible."
He added police will release more details about the man when they can.
The shooting happened at about 11:30pm near the intersection of Queen and Fort Sts.
Police said officers were called to the scene after reports of fighting among a small group, where one person pulled out a firearm and fired a number of shots.
Two people were rushed to hospital in critical condition after one was shot in the head, and the other in the abdomen. The second person remains in a stable condition.
Snt Sgt Bolton said the police investigation is continuing to make progress in holding the person responsible to account.
"I know there will be interest around what our investigation team is doing, however there are some operational sensitives at present," he said.
"I can reassure the public that our absolute priority is to bring about answers for this man's family."
Police are examining CCTV footage, and Snt Sgt Bolton asks anyone to come forward with information if they have not done so already.
