A man has been arrested after trying to open an electrical box with a metal plank and running away from police in central Auckland.
Police were called to the intersection of Karangahape and Newton Road at around 12:30am on Saturday morning after reports of disorder.
Officers found a man trying to open an electrical box with a metal plank. The man began acting aggressively towards police and was taken into custody, a spokesperson said.
The 40-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court later this month on various assault, resisting police and disorder charges.
Video footage from the scene shows the man running away from officers while swatting the metal plank through the air. A police van can be seen driving along the footpath towards the man.
He then takes off running while several police officers, including one holding a Taser, chase him.
Police manage to contain the man on the ground before the video ends.
The spokesperson said there will be a "bolstered police presence in the CBD for reassurance, particularly on the weekends, in response to alcohol-fuelled offending".
