Tesla car camera captures man keying vehicles in Botany, Auckland carpark

A frustrated Kiwi car owner is "shocked and gutted" after footage showed a man keying his car as well as two others.

The footage captured on the cameras of a Tesla Model Y and sent to Newshub starts off by showing a man allegedly keying a white four-wheel-drive Honda in the Botany Town Centre carpark on Sunday, August 13.

As the footage continues the man walks up to the Tesla and the vehicle's camera snaps him scraping the side of the car with a key.

The man then proceeds to continue walking through the car park to a silver Nissan where he keys that car as well.

As he approaches a third vehicle, a woman in a nearby car jumps out and confronts the man before escorting him away.

The owner of the Tesla, who asked to remain anonymous, told Newshub he was gutted to find his car keyed.

But was even more shocked when he discovered the man had gone on a keying spree.

"At first, I was shocked and gutted to see this happen to a new car, thinking it was done by someone who was an 'EV hater,'" the Tesla car owner told Newshub.

"When I discovered through the camera footage that he had damaged other cars too, I felt stink for other car owners who may not even know who was behind this act. That's got to be one expensive shopping trip."

A police spokesperson told Newshub officers are investigating a report of wilful damage in Botany.

It was reported to police on August 13 and it's understood the damage happened earlier that day, according to a police statement.

"At this stage, our enquiries are ongoing to determine those responsible and we are following up on information provided from the public in relation to this incident," the spokesperson told Newshub.
