A burning meteor has flashed across the sky over New Zealand, with video footage showing the ball of fire racing through the atmosphere.
Marshall Palmer, an assistant research fellow from the University of Otago's geology department, told Newshub four of its 69 meteor detection cameras spread across New Zealand observed the fireball on Monday night.
Dr Palmer, who didn't see the meteor in real-time but has reviewed the video footage, said it would've been "an amazing thing to see".
"It was running for several seconds across the sky and [it was] a really bright fireball," he told Newshub.
"It's moving so fast - [that] creates a lot of pressure in front of it and that creates a lot of heat, that then melts the rock, basically, and causes it to appear really bright in the sky."
There'd been several similar "large events" like the one on Monday night in recent times, Dr Palmer said, including a couple in the Otago region.
