MetService has issued a fresh set of road snowfall warnings as a cold front rolls over the South Island.
In an update to Twitter, the forecaster posted an image from its rain radar and satellite imagery, showing one band of rain making landfall on the West Coast, and another over Fiordland and Southland.
"Late in the day, an upper cold trough moves onto the southern South Island bringing a moderate risk of a few thunderstorms to southern Fiordland late tonight," it wrote.
"These thunderstorms bring brief heavy rain, with snow to 400 metres, and hail."
Road snowfall warnings are in place for Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73), Haast Pass (SH6), Lindis Pass (SH8), Crown Range Rd, and Milford Rd (SH94).
A heavy snow watch has also been issued for Fiordland starting from 1am on Monday.
"Snow is expected above 300 metres, and heavy snowfall is possible above 500 metres," MetService tweeted.
"Waka Kotahi will close SH94 between East Gate (Hollyford) and Donne River (Westgate) at 4:30pm tonight."
