Weather: Snow blankets Otago and Canterbury, major roads close

Snow has blanketed Otago and Canterbury on Thursday, bringing disruption for some commuters.

Arthur's Pass was closed early in the morning but had since re-opened with restrictions, while State Highway 87 out of Dunedin was also open again after an earlier closure.

2:15pm - Below are the latest Christchurch City Council road closures:

  • Dyers Pass Rd from upper Hackthorne Rd to Governors Bay Rd
  • Dyers Pass Rd intersection at Victoria Park Dr
  • Summit Rd and Godley Head at Evans Pass
  • Summit Rd from Dyers Pass Rd to Gebbies Pass
  • Sumner Rd from Reserve Tce to Evans Pass Rd 
  • Purau Port Levy from Purau to Western Valley
  • Little Akaloa Rd
  • Summit Rd from Pigeon Bay Rd to Le Bons Bay Rd

2pm - In the North Island, road snowfall warnings remain in force for Remutaka Hill Rd (SH2), Desert Rd and Napier Taupō Rd until at least 9am on Friday.

1:45pm - MetService says a large trough is moving eastwards over the North Island on Thursday, bringing a risk of thunderstorms.

"About central and eastern Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms this afternoon," the forecaster said.

"If these thunderstorms occur, they are likely to be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 15mm per hour and small hail.

"About Cape Kidnappers, Hawke's Bay and Mahia Peninsula, there is also a moderate risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the possibility of localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 20mm per hour and small hail."

1:30pm - Here are the current temperature lows across the South Island:

  • Culverden, north Canterbury - 4.2C
  • Methven, mid Canterbury - 5C
  • Twizel, south Canterbury - 6C
  • Alexandra, central Otago - 6C

1:15pm - The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says SH75 between Little River and Duvauchelle, on Canterbury's Banks Peninsula, remains closed due to snow.

1pm - Showers and coastal winds will continue across New Zealand in the coming days, WeatherWatch says.

12:45pm - Local forecaster Canterbury Weather Updates says the wild conditions aren't over yet, with another system on the way next week.

"This period has the potential to bring heavier rain and snow across the region," it says.

12:15pm - Further north, heavy showers and possible hail over Auckland are expected to ease on Thursday evening.

"Conditions for the quarter final World Cup match at Eden Park tomorrow evening are looking much more hospitable though layering up against the cold would be wise," MetService said.

12:09pm - MetService says wintry conditions are also being felt in Wellington.

"The combo of cold temps, wind & showers can be a miserable one," the forecaster said, noting the "feels like" temperature was sitting at 1C.

11:54am - Images posted on social media show snow falling on Christchurch's Sumner Beach.

11:47am - The cold front is expected to move northwards across the upper South Island on Thursday night, bringing with it heavy snow for eastern parts.

There's an orange road snowfall warning for the Napier-Taupo Rd (SH5), Desert Rd (SH1), Remutaka Hill Rd (SH2), Lewis Pass (SH7) and Dunedin to Waitati Highway (SH1). 

11:45am - Snow has begun falling in Christchurch. It's currently 5.5C in the city.
