A third person has died following a fatal crash in Otago earlier in the week.

Police confirmed on Wednesday that Whakatāne man John Banbury, 63, died in Dunedin hospital overnight.

Banbury was well-known in Whakatāne for his Prideaux & Co accounting firm, until it was sold in 2018 to Rural Accountants Limited Partnership.

Shannon Harnett, director of Rural Accountants, said he was a “very well respected and well-liked accountant".

Banbury was also known for enjoying hunting and fishing.

It comes after two vehicles crashed on State Highway 1, at Titri, just after midday on Monday.

The other victims were named earlier in the week as Te Kūiti husband and wife Kreshar Dannielle Fruean, 27, and Andrew Sheehan, 53.

The couple's car collided with Banbury's vehicle, and the pair died at the scene.

The family belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hamilton.

"Our thoughts are with their families at this difficult time," a police spokesperson said.

Hāto Hone/St John sent two helicopters, three ambulances, and two rapid response vehicles to the crash site.

Police are still investigating and have appealed for witnesses.
