More than 1000 Ford Rangers are being recalled in New Zealand due to a battery issue that can cause them to stop suddenly.

The recall is for some Ranger Utes and Everest SUVs which are at risk of suddenly switching to park mode while still moving at a low speed.

More than 1200 units of the twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine in Aotearoa will need to be returned.

Ford New Zealand says the issue relates to a low-battery charge while the vehicle is moving below 6kph.

“Due to a software issue, under certain circumstances, if the battery level drops below a critical threshold, the transmission may shift into park when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6kph,” the recall notice says.

“This may cause a sudden stop without the rear brake lamps illuminating as intended.”

Ranger takes out the country’s best-selling vehicle, with over 11,500 registrations last year.
