Homicide investigation launched after man dies in Bay of Plenty assault

A homicide investigation is underway after a man died following an assault in Bay of Plenty.

Police said officers were called to the assault at about 4:40pm on Thursday at Ford St, Ōpōtiki.

The victim was transported to Ōpōtiki Medical Centre and then Whakatane Hospital, where he died on Friday.

Officers have since arrested a 44-year-old man on Friday evening after executing a search warrant in Ōpōtiki, a spokesperson said.

The man is due to appear in the Whakatane District Court on Saturday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police said nobody else is being sought in relation to the assault.
