Investigation underway into brutal Rebels gang attack in Coromandel

An investigation is underway after brutal footage emerged of Rebels gangsters attacking three people in Coromandel.

It comes after a group of about 12 gang members and associates travelled through the region at the weekend, police said.

According to Eastern Waikato Area Commander Insp Mike Henwood, emergency services responded to a group of people, including gang members, fighting on Coromandel's Tiki Rd at about 12:30pm on Sunday.

Footage sent to Newshub showed a man lying on the ground where he was repeatedly kicked and punched.

Then, two more men are lifted and one of them bends down to assist the motionless first person on the ground.

The person who supplied the footage claimed the victims of the attack were local, two of whom reportedly sustained broken ribs and a fractured eye socket.

Henwood said while a formal complaint hadn't been laid, investigations were underway to determine what happened.

"Three people were later taken to Thames Hospital, with various injuries, after initially declining treatment," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Police have received no other reports of unlawful activity in relation [to this]."

There was "no tolerance for this type of offending" and officers "work hard to hold offenders to account where possible", Henwood said.

"If you see any suspicious, or/and illegal activity please contact police on 105 if it is after the fact or 111 if it is happening now."

The Coromandel Business Association is on Wednesday night hosting a meeting with National MPs Mark Mitchell and Scott Simpson to "discuss the weekend’s violence, public safety and law and order".

According to association vice chair Anne Louden, speaking to Newstalk ZB, the attack was one of multiple incidents involving gangs at the weekend.
