A witness told Stuff there was a lot of blood and someone had been stabbed - although this has not been confirmed by police.

Footage captured by Newshub shows a large emergency services operation in and around the bus station, with police staff speaking to members of the public.

Hato Hone St John says it was notified of the incident on Elliot Rose Ave at about 12:48pm. It responded with two ambulances, one rapid response unit and an operations manager.

An Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson said an altercation broke out at the station between members of the public.

"Events like this afternoon's attack are a very rare occurrence across our AT Metro network, but while Police are investigating, we are also looking at how we can increase our security presence at large stations like Albany," said AT executive general manager public transport services Stacey van der Putten.

In a tweet, Auckland Transport (AT) said the incident is unfolding at Albany Park and Ride Bus, platform B and surrounding areas which are "cordoned off" by emergency services.

Van der Putten said while Albany Bus Station is closed AT will detour all buses which stop at the station to a series of bus stops along Don McKinnon Dr.
