Ngā Pirihimana New Zealand Police have added a new look to its fleet of cars to better reflect diverse ethnic communities across Aotearoa.

The new livery features 75 translations of ‘kia ora’ or 'hello' on a repurposed electric vehicle.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster launched the new-look car at the Ethnic Focus Forum at Counties Manukau Police Station in Auckland on Thursday.

"This car symbolises our ongoing commitment to inclusion consultation and recruitment by valuing diversity, which is one of our core policing values as an organisation," Coster said.

The Police Ethnic Services team in Tāmaki Makaurau used existing project funding to repurpose a Hyundai Ioniq 5 from the Waitematā district fleet.

It follows the rollout of the Pirihimana (Māori), Va’a (Pasifika) and Rainbow (Pride) vehicles.

The new design comes as the agency aims to use more EVs to slash its carbon emissions, while simultaneously boosting diversity in inclusion, consultation and recruitment.
