Albany homicide: Sixteen-year-old arrested in Hamilton following 'serious incident' at north Auckland bus station

A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder following a fatal attack at the Albany bus station on Monday afternoon.  

Emergency services responded after an altercation at the bus station between members of the public.

A person was injured and transported to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition but later died from their injuries.

A witness told Stuff there was a lot of blood and someone had been stabbed - although this has not been confirmed by the police.

In an update on Tuesday morning, Det Insp Callum McNeill, of Waitematā, said police officers travelled to Hamilton on Monday evening and arrested the 16-year-old.

"We are working through the process of formal identification and contacting the family," McNeill said.

He said once the proper processes have been carried out, the victim's name will be released.

"The scene has now been cleared and investigations remain ongoing," McNeill said.  

Officers are continuing to speak to multiple witnesses who were in the area at the time of the attack, he said. Anyone who saw what happened is urged to come forward and speak to the police.

"Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. As the matter is now before the courts, police cannot comment further."  

Auckland Transport's Stacey van der Putten said on Monday: "Events like this afternoon's attack are a very rare occurrence across our... metro network but while, police are investigating, we are also looking at how we can increase our security presence at large stations like Albany."
