Four teenagers have been arrested after a nearly two-hour police chase across Auckland on Sunday morning that saw a driver flee at high speed and at times drive on the wrong side of the road.

The ordeal started just before 8am when police received a report that a car was driving recklessly in the Flat Bush area.

Police spotted the vehicle, which was stolen earlier, and signalled for the driver to stop, but they failed to do so and fled at "high speed".

A police spokesperson said officers did not pursue the vehicle because of the manner of driving, however, officers continued to monitor the car via the police Eagle helicopter.

"The driver continued to drive in an extremely dangerous manner across all three Tāmaki Makaurau police districts - including at one point driving the incorrect way down State Highway 16 at high speed," the spokesperson said.

After nearly two hours, police deployed road spikes and the car was successfully spiked on State Highway 1, near Dome Valley, at around 9:50am.

"Enquiries are in progress to determine what charges may be brought against the youths," the spokesperson said.
