A cyclist has died after a crash on Saturday evening near Dunedin.
The crash occurred on Mount Cargill Road in Waitati at 6pm. Police said there were no other vehicles involved.
"Emergency services attended but sadly, the cyclist died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.
"The Serious Crash Unit attended and enquiries are underway to determine the circumstances of the crash."
It has been a horror start to Labour weekend with the road toll sitting at three.
The first crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning when a person died after being hit by a vehicle in Waipapa, Northland.
At 5:30pm on Saturday, a person died after a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 26, between Te Aroha and Paeroa at about 5:30pm.
The third death was the fatal crash involving the cyclist in Waitati.
On Friday, a motorcyclist died in hospital following a crash with a car on State Highway 1 in Taihape. The crash doesn't count as part of the holiday weekend road toll as it happened before 4pm.
Police also reported two other separate fatal crashes just before the road toll started.
THE ROAD TOLL
The official 2023 Labour Day weekend holiday road toll began at 4pm on Friday, ending 6am on Tuesday.
In 2022, five people died over Labour weekend, with six deaths in 2021, eight in 2020, and two in 2019.
