A motorcyclist and a pedestrian are the latest people to die in crashes on New Zealand roads this weekend.

It comes after two people died and several others were seriously injured in car crashes on Friday in a horror start to the long Labour weekend.

The motorcyclist died in hospital after being critically injured in a crash on State Highway 1 near Taihape on Friday.

They were transported to hospital in a critical condition and later died, police revealed on Saturday.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

A pedestrian is also dead after being hit by a vehicle in Waipapa in Northland at about 3.35am on Saturday.

They were hit on Onekura Rd and an investigation into the crash is underway.

They are the latest people to die on New Zealand's roads in less than 24 hours after two other fatal crashes in Pākaraka and Waipū.

One fatal crash happened near Pākaraka, Whanganui District, just before 2pm.

Two vehicles were involved, and police said one person died while another was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

It's unclear if the death counts as part of the long weekend road toll which officially starts at 4pm on Friday.

Police closed State Highway 3, between Maxwell Station Road and Pukerimu Road after the crash.

WAIPŪ (NORTHLAND / TE TAI TOKERAU)

Another fatal crash happened in Waipū, in Te Tai Tokerau / Northland just before 2pm.
