A man has drowned in Southland's Waiau River on Tuesday afternoon.
The 20-year-old was swept down the river just before 1:20pm.
Emergency services, including police officers and Fiordland Marine Search and Rescue, rushed to the river to try and locate the man.
"The man was located a short time later by helicopter, deceased," a police statement said.
The body was found near Monowai Lake Rd in Blackmount, it added.
Police said the death will be referred to the coroner.
