A man has been seriously assaulted and left lying on a road in Auckland's East Tamaki.

Police received reports of the assault at 6:38pm on Thursday night at the intersection of Carpenter Road and Cryers Road.

A witness told Newshub workers in the area came outside to help the man, wrapping him up in a blanket and sitting beside him to keep him calm.

The witness described the man as looking like he'd been "seriously beaten up".

Emergency services are at the scene, including an ambulance and police detectives.

"One person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries," a police spokesperson said.

St John said one ambulance attended the scene and treated the patient, who was then taken to hospital.

A police investigation into the assault is underway.
