The man believed to have killed a woman in Wellington's suburb of Miramar has since been found dead in Hong Kong.
Police named the woman on Wednesday as Irene Katsougiannis, aged 62, following the completion of a post-mortem examination.
Katsougiannis was found dead at her Totara Rd property in Miramar just after 2pm on October 16 after her friend went to check on her with concerns for her safety.
Police responded immediately and launched a homicide investigation.
Officers believe the man responsible for her death was a male known to her, who left New Zealand on October 15, police said in a statement.
"He has since died in Hong Kong and local police are investigating the circumstances."
Police said the investigation was progressing well, and the scene examination was expected to be finished by the weekend.
