NZ weather: Strong wind lashes Canterbury leaving trees down, roofs damaged, thousands without power, ferries cancelled in Wellington

Wild weather that has lashed the country over the past few days is continuing to hamper people in the South Island and Wellington.

Ferries have been cancelled and large parts of Canterbury are without power, as high winds continue to batter the country.

About 2500 thousand homes were plunged into darkness in Canterbury overnight, with electricity providers not expecting it to be restored for many until later on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to 70 callouts in Christchurch throughout the night - with powerlines and trees down and roofs damaged.
