A person was killed on Tuesday evening in a crash along State Highway 1 in north Canterbury that involved several vehicles, police say.
Five people were taken to Christchurch Hospital with injuries ranging from serious to minor, St John said in a statement. A sixth person was also treated for minor injuries but wasn't taken to the hospital.
The stretch of SH1 where the crash happened was just south of the Macmillan Rd intersection at Spotswood, north of Cheviot.
Police said in a statement the serious crash unit was at the scene and the road was "likely to remain closed for some hours".
Motorists should avoid travelling in the area, if possible, the statement said.
