Tairāwhiti police have launched an operation to help quell gang tensions between Mongrel Mob and Black Power that have flared up in recent weeks.
Tensions between the two gangs have seen a number of incidents in Gisborne, which included a drive-by shooting on Friday, where one person was shot in the leg.
Police are investigating the shooting and Inspector Darren Paki told AM the community can expect to "see a real resolve, in terms of the investigation and solving what's gone on".
Insp Paki is leading Operation Medial. He said it has "several moving parts", including the investigation, organised crime and prevention groups.
"While investigating criminal activity and holding people to account for their actions is essential, just as important is encouraging our community to report matters to us so we can work together to help keep people safe and feeling safe."
Insp Paki told AM police received a large amount calls over recent gang incidents, which he says reflects the trust the community has in police.
He told AM the Tairāwhiti community will see an increased presence of police staff on the ground as they draw their focus on gang members causing harm.
"We use every option that's available to us, I don't want to go in too deep into some of the tactics that we're utilising, but I will say we've got a range of options available to us, and we'll be looking at every single one of those."
Insp Paki is urging local to call police if they see anything suspicious, "no matter how minor that is".
"It's not just around gang tension, it's around anything, whether that's a suspicious vehicle that might be driving around a neighborhood, or anything else, we're there to come and support our communities."
