Queenstown Airport has reopened after a potential bomb threat forced the airport into lockdown earlier this morning.

At 8:40am on Friday morning, Queenstown Airport activated its emergency security protocols to respond to a report of "what appears to be an explosive device". The airport was evacuated and people were urged to stay away.

In an update just after 3pm, Queenstown Airport said the "security incident" has been resolved.

"The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron attended and deemed the reported items posed no threat," the airport said.

"We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding."

It urged travellers whose flights have been impacted and do not have a confirmed booking to contact their airline.

Now that the police cordon has been lifted, those passengers needing to collect baggage or vehicles can do so, the airport said.

Earlier on Friday, a spokesperson for the airport said authorities were working through a security risk assessment.

"Passengers and members of the public are asked to stay away from the airport until we have received clearance to reopen."

A police spokesperson said a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) ordnance disposal unit is due to arrive at the airport on Friday afternoon to respond to the threat.

"Police advise members of public to continue to avoid the Queenstown Airport area until the incident is resolved."

Queenstown Airport said some passengers affected by the threat have returned home or to their accommodation, though about 250 people are "being looked after at the Queenstown Event Centre".

"Food and drinks and activities have been provided to those waiting."

The spokesperson urged anyone who has been affected by flight disruptions to contact their airline directly for further information.
