The vehicle was spotted again entering the Southern Motorway at Greenlane, heading south, according to Auckland City West's Acting Prevention Manager, Inspector Ivan Sarich.

"The Police Eagle helicopter has continued to observe the vehicle, which has then been signalled to stop by Police near Hill Road," Sarich said.

The vehicle didn't stop for police and continued towards Papakura before getting onto State Highway 20 and heading back towards the city.

"On a number of occasions the vehicle has driven on the wrong side of the road and at excessive speeds," he says.

The vehicle then enters SH16 before getting onto the Northern Motorway and heading over the bridge.

"After driving around the shore it headed back into the city and then south again, ending up in Papatoetoe where units have successfully spiked it at the intersection of Great South Road and Grande Vue Road.

The two men in the car were arrested by police without incident.

"This is another example of some great Police work in holding offenders to account while keeping our community safe," Sarich said.

An 18-year-old man will appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, possessing a knife in a public place and breaching community detention.

A 19-year-old man will also appear in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

The incident sparked interest on the social media site Reddit, with over a dozen people commenting on a post about the incident, many wondering what happened.

"I saw about six cars on the motorway from Albany and even more in the Rosedale area... something crazy must be going on, that's for sure," one person said.

Another person said, "Just saw a bunch hoon past northcote too."

A third person said they saw 14 police cars "shot pass" them and added that the "dude was hammering it".
