Two youths have been arrested after a police chase in west Auckland that saw a driver speed off with flat tyres before abandoning it on a busy road.

Police officers sighted the vehicle on Te Atatū Rd at about 1:30pm on Wednesday, before it was followed to a commercial address on Edmonton Rd in Te Atatū South.

A police chase then began and officers managed to successfully spike the tyres of the vehicle.

"The pursuit was abandoned on Great North Rd due to the manner of driving," a police spokesperson said.

A witness told Newshub a driver of the car had "at least one flat tyre that developed into him driving on the rims of his wheels".

Police said the driver and passenger went on to dump the vehicle on Henderson's Great North Rd, where they took off on foot.

The woman who spoke with Newshub said she saw one man run behind PaknSave, past Harvey Norman and up through a park heading towards the courthouse.

"There were probably a dozen police cars chasing him that we saw from our offices," she explained.

Police said the pair were quickly taken into custody.
